Have old computers hanging around ? The worst thing you can do is simply throw it to the curb. The only readable data is on the hard drive. First thing to do is to remove the hard drive. Recycle the rest of the computer. Most county dumps or transfer stations will take them.
Now you are holding the hard drive. What to do with it. Remember you do not want the data on that drive to get into the wrong hands. The drive could contain passwords, social security numbers, personal information etc..
1. take it apart yourself and destroy the disks (scratch them up so it is difficult to read. They are like records and can be destroyed.
2. Some office recycling companies have high powered shredders to destroy the drive.
This also goes for memory sticks, external hard drives, etc..
Better safe than sorry.
