Here are specific ways to protect yourself and your computer from ransomware.
Even if you have all the right technical safeguards (such as antivirus software, spam
filters and firewalls) in place on a customer’s system, they can still fall victim to
ransomware. All it takes is one person to accidentally click on a suspicious link or open the wrong attachment, and a whole system could be infected.
Know about ransomware and how it can hurt their business. Essentially it encrypts your data files so they are unreadable by the apps (ms word, excel eg.). Then you have to pay ransomware for the file which makes them readable again.
By the way the media has made a lot of wannacry ransomware. Ransomware has been around quite a few years.
USE REPUTABLE ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE AND A FIREWALL. You get what you pay for.
Don’t click on links inside emails (unless you are 100% sure of the source), and avoid suspicious websites.
The most important is data backup. There are cloud backup companies that start at $5.00 per month per machine. This reduces downtime and having to pay ransom. Even if you never get ransomware there are many other ways to lose data ( hard drive failure, accidental erasure, corrupted operating system, employee sabotage etc) .
